Summer festival season is well under way and there are not shortage of options in the Bay Area. So if you're tired of elbowing your way through the drunken twenty-somethings at the Union Street Fair and other San Francisco street festivals, perhaps it's time to head out for something a little more grown up. Many San Francisco residents aren't aware that most of the towns on the peninsula offer similar festivals with a lot more space and a lot less lunacy. Enter the first of many to come - Art in the Park in Burlingame's Washington Park.
Burlingame is just an exit off of Hwy 101 for most Bay Area commuters, but for those of us that live here it's a fantastic place to live. It's an easy commute to Silicon Valley and only twenty minutes from downtown San Francisco. And the Caltrain station, dating back to 1894, provides easy access to points North and South.
Art in the Park is just the first of a few great outdoor events in Burlingame throughout the summer. Located in Washington Park, known for it's beautiful trees and rose garden, Art in the Park has food, live music, and of course, lots of art. But don't expect to see loads of local artists here. The art being exhibited has all been produced by local Burlingame-area children. No necessarily a bad thing, but you probably shouldn't be planning on picking anything up for your formal dining room.
So come to esape the chaos of San Francisco, and stay for the food, drink, and live music. And support some local children in the process. But one thing you should be very aware of before making the trip. Other than its towering euchalyptus trees which game the city its nickname of City of Trees, Burlingame is also known for the traffic jam of Bugaboo strollers on Burlingame Avenue. There are literally kids, babies, and pregnant women EVERYWHERE. So if that sort of thing makes you squeamish, you may want to head down to the Triangle in Cow Hollow instead.
