San Jose Sharks' fans are all waiting for GM Doug Wilson to make a big move and bring some serious talent into the line up. However the rookie Sharks' performance in their tournament versus Anaheim shows that San Jose might have all the talent it needs.
In game one, the rookie Sharks proved their resolve and determination. They won the game 2-1 in a shootout. An eight-round shootout.
The second game of the three-game tourney showed that the rookie Sharks could work themselves up into a frenzy and rout the opposing team. The Sharks destroyed the Ducks 5-0 and won for the second straight night.
Several Sharks' rookies have already made a name for themselves and may be seen in the Sharks' lineup soon. Free agent Dean Strong scored the final shot in the eight-round shootout. He also set-up the Sharks' first goal. Strong would go on to score the opening goal in game two.
San Jose goalie Thomas Heemsmerk stopped 7 of 8 shots in the shootout, and 26 of 27 in regulation play. Alex Stalock, the goalie for the Sharks in the second game, stopped all 25 shots to earn a shutout.
Fans may recognize Nick Petrecki as the Sharks' former first round draft pick. Petrecki recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, an assist, and a fight.
Kevin Henderson scored twice and was only an assist away from posting his own Gordie Howe hat trick.
These players performed well and captured the attention of those watching. However it is easy for under-estimate how important these rookie games are. In the 2005 tournament, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf were the super star rookies who ran all over the Sharks. Recognize those names? You may have blocked them out of your memory when they knocked the Sharks out of the 2008-2009 playoffs in the first round.
Players like Devin Setoguchi and Milan Michalek performed well in the rookie games, and are now in the top two lines of the San Jose Sharks.
Essentially, the rookie games do a good job of predicting future stars in the NHL. Hopefully the Sharks' rookies can continue to play well. If so, you might see Dean Strong and Nick Petrecki leading the Sharks past the Anaheim Ducks in a couple years.
