What a game.  The San Jose Sharks defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3 for the Sharks' home opener.

Not only did the Sharks win, but Dany Heatley recorded a hat trick, the first Sharks player to do so since Jonathan Cheechoo.

Joe Thornton racked up four assists, which tied a franchise record.

Devin Setoguchi had another multi-point game, and Dan Boyle scored his first goal of the season.

The sellout crowd at HP Pavilion watched as the Sharks started the game slow, but built up speed.  The Blue Jackets stuck first when Rick Nash scored his first goal of the season.

The Sharks fed off of the energy of the home crowd when Dan Boyle scored on a wrist shot in the second.  Only three minutes later, Dany Heatley netted his second goal as a Shark when he moved from behind the net and shot the puck top shelf over Steve Mason's shoulder.

The Shark Tank erupted when Ryane Clowe dropped the gloves with Michael Blunden.  Clowe landed several good hits and took off Blundedn's helmet.

Less than a minute later, Frazer McLaren fought Derek Dorsett, which lasted several minutes and saw both players land several hard punches.

Mark Edouard-Vlasic scored his first goal of the season with a slapshot that Mason was unable to block.

Heatley sent the puck through Mason's five-hole with only 12 seconds left in the second period to bring the Sharks up 4-2.

Jason Chimera and Raffi Torres also scored for Columbus.

The Sharks came out hungry in the third period.  Devin Setoguchi received a pass from Joe Thornton and slapped the puck into the net to record his fourth goal of the season.

The culmination of the game occured when Dany Heatley had a semi-breakaway.  Rostislav Klesla, the Colombus defenseman, tripped Heatley in an attempt to stop him from scoring.  Heatley was then rewarded with a penatly shot.  Heatley, in front of a sellout crowd during the home opener, went one-on-one with Garon in hopes to complete his hat trick.  It could not have been more dramatic.  Number fifteen was cool under the pressure and wristed the puck past Garon and hats from dozens of fans littered the ice.

Heatley tied a franchise record with his +6 rating and the Sharks gave all of the fans at HP Pavilion a great opening night.

The Sharks take on the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, October 10th, at 7:30 in HP Pavilion.
