With second line center Joe Pavelki out due to a lower body injury, the San Jose Sharks lost 6-4 to the Los Angeles Kings.
The Sharks played weak in their zone for the first half of the game, letting the Kings jump to a 4-0 lead.
However the game wasn't all bad.
Number one, the Sharks didn't give up. They battled back to tie the game 4-4. Unfortunately Thomas Greiss, who filled in for Evgeni Nabokov after Nabby let in 4 out of 20 shots, let the crucial fifth goal in for the Kings.
Number two, Dany Heatley scored his first goal as a San Jose Shark. Heatley scored with a slap shot on the powerplay in the final minutes of the third period to tie the game at four. Unfortunately his goal did not lead to a San Jose win.
Number three, the San Jose Sharks were four-for-four on the powerplay. Devin Setoguchi scored two goals, one of them a beautiful wrist shot, and Rob Blake tipped in one of his own.
The Sharks did well to fight back from a 4-0 defecit, but if they could have played strong from the beginning, the Sharks would have brought home a win.
Scoring on every powerplay opportunity is a good sign, but they should have been able to net some goals during even strength play.
Although the Kings won 6-4, the game was closer than the score indicated. The game was tied 4-4 with five minutes left in the third. Teddy Purcell scored goal number five and Davis Drewiske scored the last goal on the empty net.
Wayne Simmonds, Anze Kopitar, Jack Johnson, and Ryan Smyth also scored for the Kings.
It was an exciting game to watch, but hopefully the Sharks pick up their game as the season progresses. San Jose played well in some areas, and the game wasn't a total loss, however they will need to fix up their play to be a Stanley Cup contender.
