The San Jose Sharks were coming off of a tough 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche when they faced the Anaheim Ducks. In case you blocked it out of your memory, the Ducks knocked the Sharks out of the playoffs in 2008-2009.
This was a revenge game, no doubt about it. The Sharks went into the Honda center and showed the Ducks fans that the Sharks are a team to be reckoned with.
The Sharks soundly defeated the Ducks 4-1.
Rookie Benn Ferriero opened the scoring in the first period. Ferriero scored on a backhand during a delayed penalty call. Fellow rookies Jason Demers and Frazer McLaren assisted and got their first NHL points.
Offseason acquisition Dany Heatley is expected to bring glory to the Sharks. Things didn't look so good when he went -3 in the Avalanche game. Things didn't look much better when he was called for tripping in the end of the first period. However, Patrick Marleau used his speed and skill to backhand a shorthanded goal past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller.
Heatley added a real point to the game when he and Joe Thornton broke out on a two-on-one. Heatley fed Jumbo Joe a pass and Thornton backhanded it into the net to put the Sharks up 3-0.
San Jose's first line showed off their chemistry when Devin Setoguchi scored his first goal of the season as Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley set him up during a powerplay.
The Ducks were able to get one puck past San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov during the game. Ray Whitney scored midway through the third period, but Nabby stopped the other 24 shots on net.
The Sharks looked sharp against the Ducks, and will hopefully continue to play well throughout the season, and most importantly, the post-season.
