American coot is a common waterbird often mistaken for a duck.  This one was swimming alone near the North Ave. Beach.

They belong to the rail family and can be distinguished from ducks by their chicken-like beaks with black marks near the tips.  Often solitary, but sometimes you can see them in groups.  This one was photographed at Montrose Harbor.

Another lonesome coot at the North Pond in Lincoln Park.  Their legs are yellowish, with scalloped toes rather than webbed feet.
