Is 5 friends uncensored viral marketing?

October 6, 2:30 PM
by Jennifer L. Taylor, Marketing Examiner

With viral marketing making such a big splash these days, I was not surprised when a friend forwarded a link to this "5 Friends Uncensored" YouTube video.

The YouTube video is a PSA (public service announcement) with Leonardo diCaprio, Ellen DeGeneres, Forrest Whittaker, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Dustin Hoffman, and others. The marketing message has 3 obvious objectives:

1. Telling people NOT to vote, using reverse psychology and hinting on all the reasons why they shouldn't care about the financial markets, the economy, rising costs, healthcare, gun control, and a host of other reasons.

2. Now that they've gotten the audience riled up, the actors then tell the viewers to register to vote. Without the registration--no voting allowed.

3. Send to 5 people. Then they send to 5 and on and on.

Oh, yeah...that's what viral marketing is...something that consumers send all over the world to their friends and family. The effects can be a powerful force.

Instead of sending to 5 of my friends, I'm posting it here so the 5 Friends Uncensored video can get to more people than just 5 of my friends.

Living in America, it is easy to take for granted our voice. If your state's deadline to register to vote hasn't passed, I encourage you to to do it. I also encourage you to send this page's link to 5 of your friends.
