Recent Food Recalls for Beef and Milk Products Expand

The recent recalls of milk products from Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, and beef from JBS Swift, Co. for possible salmonella or E. coli contamination is hitting the food industry hard. Retailing giant Kroger was among the first to be hit with recalls for private label popcorn seasonings and private label beef, but as the ripples continue to spread companies throughout the U.S. and Canada are now affected.

June 24, 2009, JBS Swift (Greeley, CO) issued a recall of beef products produced on April 21 and 22, 2009 due to possible E. coli contamination. On June 29th, Swift expanded the recall to a total of more than 430,000lbs. that were distributed both nationally and internationally. Some of the meat was sold under the Swift name, but some went to private label or products that received further processing. The investigation began with 24 reported illnesses in several states.

Plainview Milk Products Cooperative (Plainview, MN) issued a voluntary recall last month for a possible salmonella contamination of an assortment of milk products sold over the past two years to manufacturers to be used in the production of a wide range of food products such as popcorn seasonings, whey protein supplements, dietary shakes, Malt-O-Meal cereal products, oatmeal, and more. See the links below for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration recall announcements for the current list of products related to these recalls and others for the dates July1 – July 8, 2009.

As the list of products grows, an already difficult economic climate becomes more strained for the manufacturers and retailers affected by recalls that continue to erode consumer confidence in the U.S. food industry.

Retailers have been working with vendors to strengthen food safety standards that sometimes are outdated and subject to jurisdictional confusion between federal agencies, and sometimes between them and local authorities. In the end, retailers may be forced to become more effective watchdogs than government in the case of food safety, as they have more to lose in cases when private label programs are key to their strategies.
