Put down that sunscreen if you value your brain. Your body makes Vitamin D from sunlight and your brain uses that vitamin to think faster and smarter. And when researchers at the University of Manchester looked at the vitamin D levels of more than 3,000 men aged 40 to 79 years, they found that those with most D had the highest octane thinking power.
In particular, this study found that aging brains kept their thinking power at a higher level when vitamin D was high. Men over 60 with lots of vitamin D, the scientists discovered, could process information faster.
To get more vitamin D, aside from sun bathing, eat fish high in oil like sardines, herring and salmon. All of these provide healthy doses of this invaluable nutrient.
Researcher David Lee, Phd, of the Manchester School of Translational Medicine noted that “Previous studies exploring the relationship between vitamin D and cognitive performance in adults have produced inconsistent findings but we observed a significant, independent association between a slower information processing speed and lower levels of vitamin D.”
So step away from the sunscreen and let the sun shine in! Your brain will thank you.
