There is a great deal of concern these days over health care reform. How can health care be more affordable and accessible? What type of government involvement will there be? The debate continues and we are right to be concerned and involved.
Health care insurance in this country is not available or affordable for everyone. And for those without it one major accident or illness could wipe out a person’s finances. Are there any alternatives?
Two Christian ministries are providing health care cost assistance. Christian Healthcare Ministries and Samaritan Ministries International are two organizations who use an early Christian model of voluntary sharing resources to help alleviate one another’s burdens, specifically health care costs (see Acts 4:32-35).
Neither organization is health care insurance. Both rely on members to contribute affordable monthly financial gifts. These financial gifts are then used to help pay health care costs for other members. It operates somewhat like a cooperative.
Interestingly, this biblical solution to health care costs has been around for some 15 years. Samaritan Ministries started in 1994 and Christian Healthcare Ministries in 1995. I discovered these ministries through a blog posting by Tony Dale, a physician and commentator.
There is a lot of information available at both organizations’ websites. While they operate similarly, there are some differences and you should review their member guidelines and frequently asked questions sections.
