Don't you just love a happy ending? I know I do. So does Copy the cat, and his person, Lisa Hoytt, of Novato. Monday, Copy was chased down a storm drain by an over-eager terrier in Hoytt's neighborhood, and became wedged in the drain.

Who ya gonna call? In this case, Marin Humane came to the rescue, bringing the Novato Fire Department and Department of Pubic Works into the fray. And they used a bit of high-tech help: a cable optic camera (yes, not unlike those used in colonoscopies!) to locate twelve-pound Copy in the drain so they could chart his rescue.

MHS Animal Services Officer James Reis responded to the scene, followed by Officers Dave Stapp and Adrienne Russo. The frightened feline was wedged approximately 20 feet from the six inch drain opening.
“Thanks to the DPW’s camera, we were able get an exact location of the kitty through all the sludge and rocks,” says Officer Stapp. “We gently nudged the cat with the camera until eventually one of the firemen – who had the longest reach – was able to turn him around and maneuver him to safety.”
Kudos to the brave and wise officers who rescued Copy in a four-hour mission. “I don’t know how I can possibly say ‘thank you’ enough to the Marin Humane Society, said Hoytt. “Those officers will be getting Christmas presents from me for the next several years.”
