When you have an interview you need to look your best. You may need more than one outfit if you get a second interview. Looking professional and well groomed is an important part of landing a job. It can be hard to invest in new clothes for an interview when you aren’t working. Thrift shops and consignment stores can be a great place to shop for interview clothes. These same stores can then become a great source of clothing once you are working. Many of the thrift shops support local charities so you are doing good while you are saving money. Be sure to check with each store for its hours of operations.

What these stores may lack in fancy surrounding they more than make up for in bargains.
Here are a few simple rules:

1. Check over each item carefully for missing buttons, rips, tears or holes. Loose hemlines and buttons can be fixed, but do not buy a garment with major flaws. Look for natural fibers like wool, cotton and silk. They hold up better than synthetics.

2. Check over the garment for stains like food or underarm stains. These may not be able to be removed. Check for make-up stains on women’s garments.

3. Try on an item before you buy to be sure it fits and looks good on you.

4. Clean or dry clean each item before wearing. You want to look your best so check over the item and have it professionally cleaned if possible. The item will still be a bargain compared to the local department store.
