While The Buckhorn Exchange is Denver's oldest restaurant (holding liquor license #1), very few consider it for their next happy hour excursion. In fact, despite living in Denver for over a year, my husband and I were informed of this steakhouse via The Food Channel. We immediately made plans to check out the historical Old West experience.
The Buckhorn is located in an older part of town and surrounded by residential homes and government housing. It sits directly across from the 10th and Osage light rail station. Upon entering, one is greeted by a friendly hostess and a "575-piece collection of taxidermy, including deer and moose, giant buffalo, mountain goat and big horn sheep; dozens of indigenous fowl; even a two-headed calf and a legendary jackalope."
The bar is located on the second level and features several extremely comfortable seating options, from large leather chairs to two-seater sofas. From 4 to 6 pm, happy hour offers include 2 for 1 wine and cocktails, along with a few beer specials. Considering the fact that a vodka martini costs less than $10 during regular hours, the happy hour special is unbeatable.
The setting at The Buckhorn Exchange can be a bit intimidating. However, I can certainly appreciate an environment that is quiet enough to have a good conversation and comfortable enough to sit for hours, while enjoying $5 martinis, and perhaps, a rocky mountain oyster or two.
