Philly based NutriSystem Inc. has formed an alliance with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to educate the general public, healthcare professionals and individuals with Type 2 diabetes on the importance of losing and successfully maintaining a healthy weight. Nutrisystem will also support efforts initiated by the ADA to fund advocacy programs, and research for people with diabetes.
24 million Americans have diabetes and practically all adults who have Type 2 diabetes are overweight. What exactly does that mean? It means that Type 2 diabetes is preventable. A healthy diet and exercise are the successful combatants against the disorder. Research studies prove that even a minimal weight loss, like 5 to 7% of total body weight has a positive impact on blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and reduces the threat of heart disease in overweight Type 2 diabetes individuals.
Nutrisystem who markets The NutriSystem D, a specifically designed weight loss program for people with Type 2 diabetes, pledged support in the areas of initiating activities focusing on a grass roots attempt at spreading the word about the correlation between weight loss and Type 2 diabetes. Nutrisystem will sponsor the ADA’s Stop Diabetes that launches this month - Stop Diabetes -- an initiative to educate Americans about the physical, emotional and life threatening effects of diabetes. Nutrisystem has also supported the ADA's Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes event in Philadelphia 2009.
According to a Nutrisystem press release, American Diabetes Association Chair of the Board George Huntley had this to say, "We are thrilled to have the support of Nutrisystem as we continue the effort to put an end to diabetes. The fact that Nutrisystem is stepping up to support our organization is a testament to how important the fight to stop diabetes is to our nation as a whole. We thank Nutrisystem for its generous support."
