Fresh off their June 30th release of Wilco (The Album), Jeff Tweedy and company bring their rock show to Vienna's Wolf Trap tomorrow. Wilco is poised with their latest release, a seventh studio effort that's solid in every way. Wreaking of George Harrison and Tweedy's blend of maligned and provoked lyrics, The Album is accessible to both old and new Wilco fans. Not as sonic or critically-acclaimed as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, or as silly-Tweedy-guitar-like as A Ghost Is Born (my fave), or as Grammy-nominated as Sky Blue Sky for that matter, the new album makes a safe but stellar play for the Chicago-borne country-folk-rockers.
Coming off an absolutely disgusting-looking show and set list at Red Rocks, Wilco looks to carry-on the summer tour momentum at Wolf Trap Wednesday. One of the DC area's finest, if not the, outdoor venue, Wolf Trap is a perfect setting for Tweedy's voice, Nels Cline's rips, and John Stirratt's rhythmic bombs.
The sets take from the band's entire repertoire, including presence from YHF, AGIB, SBS, and their latest. And while never considered 'face-melters', one look at the Red Rocks set suggests strong guitar plays: 'Bull Black Nova'; 'At Least That's What You Said'; 'Impossible Germany'; 'Spiders (Kidsmoke)'; and 'Hoodoo Voodo'. Other potentials to be played tomorrow night include 'Muzzle of Bees'; 'You Are My Face'; 'Misunderstood'; 'Via Chicago'; 'One Wing'; and 'Jesus, Etc.', among others.
Lest it go unsaid, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band will open for Wilco tomorrow. We all know Conor from his Bright Eyes days, the author of great indie albums like I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, A Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, and Lifted. That indie-folk sound will pair well with the headliner. Tuning Bob Dylan in his latest effort Outer South, this is an opener you won't want to miss.
The show is sold out, however reasonable offers exist on the secondary markets.
