Rock super-hero group Them Crooked Vultures take the stage at 930 Club tomorrow night, October 14th. Locally-raised rock god Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame anchors the drums while Led Zeppelin (yeah, that Led Zeppelin) stud John Paul Jones (bassist and keyboards) and Josh Homme (lead vocals, guitar) from Queens of the Stone Age fill out team TCV. The band also features Alain Johannes during its live performances, although it's unclear how much he'll contribute to the impending but as-of-yet unspecified release (potential 10/23?) of their self-titled studio album.
The group as an idea formed back in 2005 when Grohl alluded to the trio collaborating in an interview with Mojo. They performed their first show in Chicago this past August as a late-night gig during Lollapalooza. TCV has subsequently performed other shows in Europe, including gigs at London's Brixton Academy, at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, and at Pukkelpop.
Salivating fans have been anticipating the album release and their current 'Deserve the Future Tour'. Kicking off on October 1st, appearances have included Austin, Nashville, Columbus, Detroit, Toronto, Boston, and Philly. Tomorrow's show in DC is the penultimate North American gig before TCV heads back to Europe. A third leg of the tour will cover ground in Australia and New Zealand. Tickets allegedly have sold out to most shows in under 10 minutes. As far as DC goes, most fans were shut out before the 2 minute mark during the public sale. Some tickets are available for a reasonable price on the secondary markets.
Them Crooked Vultures have certainly mastered the art of seduction, as if it were in some way needed. They've released teasers of studio-penned efforts of bad-ass tracks like 'Scumbag Blues', 'Elephants', and 'Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I'. While the QOTSA influence is hard to ignore, these songs sound more like Led-2020 to me. It's always awesome to hear Grohl smacking the drums around too. A pretty sweet interview from Detroit's 89X is available. Additional sick live performances can be found on YouTube here, here and here. And here.
Doors to tomorrow's show open at 7PM. Mini Mansions are set to open the evening and will likely take the stage around 8 while TCV will start melting faces around 9:15 or so. Get your tickets...this is going to be a silly show and likely your only opportunity in awhile to catch a member of Led Zeppelin perform live. A setlist from Stub's in Austin shows a 13-song set of the aforementioned tunes:
- Elephants
- Mind Eraser
- Dead End Friends
- Scumbag Blues
- Gunman
- Caligulove
- Bandoliers
- Daffodils
- Interlude w/ Ludes
- Reptiles
- New Fang
- Nobody Loves Me
- Warsaw
