Thanks to the Chicago Audio Journal, we can hear individual files of each Alderman questioning commisioners as they present and defend their 2009 budgets.

In a hearing on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, living legend Lois Weisberg, longtime comissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs (and mother of Slate editor Joe Weiserg) had a 59-second conversation with Alderman Margaret Laurino of the North Side's 39th Ward. Laurino uses her speaking opportunity to pimp the Albany Park Theater Project "highlighted even in the New York Times".

She then goes on to tell her that she "got a letter" from the Labor History Society asking her to "include the new statue of Samuel Gompers at Foster and Pulaski in some of our neighborhood tours".  Gompers is the founder of the American Federation of Labor Go see. replies, "I know about that", because she knows about everything -- even Malcolm Gladwell says so. Upon further review, it seems Gompers Park even has a wetland over there.

This is how things get done. You send a letter to your Alderman, one day she's talking to a Commissioner in City Hall, and you get what you wanted. The Chicago Audio Journal is a treasure trove. This is your money, your city. Go listen to some files and dive into what's there.
