Free Museums in NY series *SPECIAL*: Museum Mile today!
Well, ladies and gentlemen, today is a NYC-centric day that I wait for all year. Museum Mile! Talk about a great FREE deal:
A New York City tradition for 30 years (this will be the 31st), 5th Avenue shuts down for, you guessed it, a mile long—between 82nd and 105th Streets. Why? Because there are a whole bunch of fantastic museums along that mile-long strip. And you can get into any of the 9 featured sites for free!
Right across from Central Park, you can browse through the streets of NY completely undisturbed by cars. That means scheduled performances, musicians, children’s activities, food vendors, etc. crowd the streets for added entertainment. Trust me, you’ll want these distractions while you’re waiting in line. I warn you that the wait can be long, but it’s worth it. Similarly, museums can be crowded, but attendees are only let in in batches so that there isn’t a Black Friday-esque scene and you can enjoy the art without being shoved over.
Since the forecast predicts rain, I’ll mention that the event goes on, come rain or come shine, from 6-9pm.
Participating museums offering free admission for the night:
- El Museo del Barrio
- Museum of the City of New York
- The Jewish Museum
- Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution
- National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts
- Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
- Neue Galerie New York
- Goethe-Institut New York/German Cultural Center
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
I love when the arts are supported and encouraged!
