Free Museums in NY series: Carnegie Hall’s Rose Museum
While concerts at Carnegie are not free, its history-rich Rose Museum is. Opened as part of Carnegie Hall’s 100th anniversary celebration in 1991, this museum allows you to peruse hundreds of artifacts and memorabilia from past Carnegie shows, lectures and concerts.
The variety of substantial and significant objects tells the story of not only the 119 year old concert hall but the shifting social scenes and eras that passed through it over time. From Beethoven’s ring and Brahm’s eyeglasses to Benny Goodman’s clarinet, Judy Garland’s sequined jacket and an autographed program from the Beatles’ 1964 concert, this National Historical Landmark has something to please everyone.
This is listed first in my Free Museums in NY series because it is closed July-September, so hurry! If you do miss it and you still want a taste of Carnegie, note that the Hall generously sponsors many free shows throughout the city in their Neighborhood Concert Series. Find local events near you:
Also be sure to check out the extensive website which features audio clips of over 20
Carnegie Hall-commissioned works from 2006-on. You can even download mp3s of selected works for free!
