To all you women on Michigan Avenue whose dress or skirt flies up now and then...
Here we go, ladies. When the famed Wall Street Journal releases an article on the disappearance of women's slips, I wonder if the writer was bored, needed some peppy content, etc. Ok, the article was written in the 'Style' section of the Journal. Got it. The more I thought about it, I do agree with the whole sentiment that it continues to be more difficult to find a good ole' fashioned slip at the department store.
When I was a teenager, I lived in slips. Every wedding, church function or dress up affair that involved a skirt that required more material meant wearing a slip. I didn't mind them at all. I liked the extra layer of material between my rump and my thin layer of dress or skirt.
The article makes some terrific points - times have changed. From our beloved Spanx to thongs galore, little is left to the eye when it comes to a gal's body underneath her sassy wardrobe. If you ask ME, I love watching those old movies and seeing Elizabeth Taylor or Annette Bening lounging around in their slips. Just last night, I caught a glimpse of 'American Beauty' and saw the scene with Annette in her red slip cleaning that house and thought - 'that's a gorgeous slip'.
Remember my recent trip to Mexico? I bought a beautiful handmade dress- absolutely gorgeous. The entire dress is white and see-through and I need a slip. Not just any slip, but a good length, color, etc. Problem is, there are so FEW slips at the stores that I'm stuck with a small selection. It's mid July and I am yet to wear the dress.
You may not like slips, but if you ask me, I'm liking the idea of bringing back a little bit of mystery when it comes to what lays underneath a woman's dress. From a romantic standpoint, I can see men liking the allure of seeing a woman's slip as she disrobes, creating a streamlined silhouette versus having one's imperfections spill over their undies:).
All hail the slip!
