Have you ever noticed that when indie bands, like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (at right), self-publish their music, there's a respect and credibility to the act? But when writers self-publish their books, say with Lulu.com or with a vanity press, it's typically regarded as, well, kind of lame?
Eric Danton has an interesting piece in The Hartford Courant that takes a look at this discrepancy. The article quotes Paste magazine editor-in-chief Josh Jackson saying, "In the book world, it's so fragmented, with so many publishing houses out there, that somebody doing something on their own has more of a stigma because it suggests that everybody else passed on it."
The article also briefly covers how the web is lessening the self-publishing stigma, and helping writers get their work out there, signing off with Stewart O' Nan saying, "Any way you can get your writing out there is valid."
How else is the web or new upstart companies helping writers? Your thoughts below.
