Some friends of mine were in town Tuesday night, and they wanted to see me do standup. So we all went out to Cafe Ethiopia, and then headed over to Jack's Club where I heard there was an open mic. Now, I estimate I've performed between one and two thousand times, and I've learned two very improtant things: 1) never pass up an opportunity to perform and 2) never allow your friends to come see you at an open mic. We ducked out, and I didn't perform. Headed to Mitchell's Ice Cream instead. My new jokes about my trip to India will live to see another day.
If you're just starting out, or you're curious about where to hit an open mic for the first time, SF Standup is a great resource. There are lots of comedian links, interviews, and an up-to-date list of who's performing at what club.
At The Punch Line: next Tuesday and Wednesday, one of my all-time favorite comics, Arj Barker (from Flight of the Conchords, Comedy Central, and The Marajuanalogues.) He's absurd, cocky, hilarious, and affable.
