Look at the Birdie is the title and the title work of a brand new collection of posthumously published works by the celebrated Kurt Vonnegut. While I have not had the good fortune to read the whole book just yet, I did get my hand on the short story, Look at the Birdie. And as a giant bookworm who has never read Vonnegut before, I feel I can offer some untempered opinions, despite my snobby literary training.
Look at the Birdie is, at it's most basic lever, SUPER COOL. The plot reveals itself with near perfect pacing, leaving you wide-eyed at just the right moment. The characters are fun, being no more complete than your run of the mill short story characters (protagonist = you, antagonist = most developed person in the story, side characters = creeeeepy people). The story doesn't hold anything back, it's not in a hurry, and it has a plan before it even sat down at the bar with you.
As of right NOW, (9:45 pm PST on Oct 20, 2009) the story is available on the LA Times website. If it is still up, I suggest you read it. It'll take five minutes and make your day much more interesting.
The story is also quite appropriate for the season, for all you spooky seekers.
Happy Reading.
