San Francisco Chronicle Unit Chair Michelle Devera issued the following statement last Monday, August 24:
The Guild was given a "heads-up" today that more layoffs are in store for The Chronicle. There were no details as to numbers or departments, but additional information was expected within a day or two.
Arrangements are being made for Guild leadership to meet with management representatives. If we hear anything, we will let you know. As always, please check our Web site for updates. In solidarity,
Michelle Devera, Unit chair
Details are still to be decided, although some positions may be cut this upcoming week after Labor Day. Chronicle management representatives met with the California Media Workers Guild Friday to discuss plans to eliminate jobs through buyouts and layoffs.
The Chronicle continues to lose money, with losses running in excess of $1 million a week. The Media Workers Guild was told that revenues continue to dive worse than expected, primarily because of the struggling economy coupled with deteriorating ad revenue.
"Any Guild member interested in discussing a voluntary buyout is encouraged to let this be known," the CMWG advised on their website. "You may contact your supervisor, Human Resources or the Guild. We will keep any buyout interest confidential during the initial discussions."
