Shamanism is healing on the spiritual layer of existence. This can be described as one of the outer most layers of the energetic body, (like an aura) which surrounds and influences our physical bodies, and is in constant contact with all other living creatures. Shamanism is the oldest form of medicine, with cave paintings of ceremonies being found from tens of thousands of years ago. Shamanism has suffered much oppression through the ages, but the techniques have striking similarities across cultures and distant geographies. The healing is performed by a shaman, or a shamanic practitioner, who accesses Non-Ordinary Reality (NOR). This is accomplished through the use of repetitive percussive sound such as a drumbeat. Four to seven beats per second puts the brain into theta waves, which is the portal for access into NOR, and has been used in modern healing techniques such as Theta Healing.
Shamanism is absolutely dependent on the assistance of benevolent healing spirits, who exist all around us in NOR. These can be ancestors, relatives, ascended masters, archetypes, or totems. In Carl Jung’s last interview before his passing, he said that he would use the term “spirit” instead of “archetype” for describing the all-encompassing emanations of aspects of our own deep psychology that embrace and blend and are mutually influenced by spirituality.
Shamanism is often used in contemporary times for difficult situations such as addictions, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and many other issues. The layers of our energetic body can allow spiritual dis-ease to trickle down into the physical, emotional, and mental layers of our body. Techniques for healing include soul retrieval, extraction, totem retrieval, depossession, or other healing techniques such as with the drum, or through sound, dance, a healing symbol, or “prescription.”                                             Divination and psychopomp work are also important aspects of shamanism. Divination is getting clarity to an issue through use of information not necessarily available to ordinary reality. Psychopomp is conveying of souls, or helping those who have died to complete their journeys to where they are going next. For those who have no concept of what may lie beyond this life, are impaired when they die, or die very suddenly, sometimes they can get “trapped” here in our Middle World, existing amongst us but in another dimension, so to speak. They cannot interact as the living do, but need to be able to move on.
