Any self-professed gourmand worth her salt enjoys a good spice shop - the better the ingredients, the better the dish. Savory Spice Shop has been a favorite of mine since the owners, Mike and Janet Johnston, first moved from Chicago in 2004 and opened a store on Platte Street on the edge of downtown Denver.
A couple years after that, they opened a second location in Littleton and have now expanded into Boulder at 2041 Broadway (between Spruce and Pearl). What makes this little shop so great is the product and the people (oh yeah, and the price too). These friendly folks hand-blend a number of spices, most purchased in bulk, and pass the savings on to the customer. But don't mistake Savory for a discount spice supplier - these guys are all about quality.
When I walk into their shop, my olfactory senses are immediately seduced by the fragrance of spices wafting through the air and I can't wait to try something new like Hickory Smoked Salt or Pyramid Peak Lemon Pepper. You can sample nearly any product in the store, and they will happily tell you about the difference between the four types of cinnamon they carry.
Savory Spice Shop carries a great inventory of seasonings from around the world from the common to the exotic, and will measure out the exact quantitiy you need. This is great for recyclers - we don't have to buy a new jar or buy in huge quantities!
As if all this weren't enough, this little spice-shop-that-could will be featured on an upcoming episode of Road Tasted With the Neelys on Food Network. The episode is set to air on August 5 at 7:30 p.m. MT.
