Three San Jose pitchers combined on a no-hitter against the Inland Empire 66’ers in a 3-0 win Thursday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Ballpark.
Giants starter David Mixon (3-1) retired the first 17 hitters he faced. He didn’t allow a base runner until two outs in the sixth when he walked Jessie Mier. Mixon then threw two wild pitches, allowing Mier to get to third. But he struck out Johnny Rosario, his tenth strikeout of the night, to end the threat and preserve San Jose’s 3-0 lead.
Ryan Shaver took over in the seventh inning and with one out walked a batter, then hit one and walked another to load the bases. But he got out of trouble by inducing Preston Mattingly to ground into a double play. Shaver pitched a one-two-three eighth.
Rafael Cova pitched the ninth inning and gave up just one walk while striking out two to complete the gem and earn his eighth save.
Normally a reliever, it was only Mixon’s second start of the season and the first no-hitter he’d ever been a part of.
“Tonight was one of the first nights my curveball has really been on that well so I felt that I could throw it at any time and keep them off-balance a bit with a fastball and curveball. Everything was clicking and it was nice and smooth.”
Only five Inland Empire batters reached base; four on walks and one who was hit by a pitch. It was the second combined no-hitter in San Jose Giants’ history. The first was on May 5, 2002 when Boof Bonser and R.D. Spiehs combined to no-hit Rancho Cucamonga.
The Giants got all the runs they needed on Brian Bocock’s third home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning off Eric Krebs (1-0).
The victory was San Jose’s eighth in a row and concludes a three-game sweep of the 66’ers. It was also their 48th win of the second half, which ties the club record set in the second half of the 1988 season.
Next up is a four-game series against the Lake Elsinore storm at The Diamond, the final series of the regular season. Scheduled starters on Friday night are Kyle Nicholson (4-0) for the Giants and Wynn Pelzer (11-8) for the Storm.
