Tyler Graham knocked in Nick Noonan with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie as the San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports, 3-2 Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
San Jose is 6-1 in the second half and has the best record in the California League.
Noonan led off the ninth with a walk and was bunted to second by Shane Jordan. Noonan advanced to third on a passed ball and was driven home by Graham’s sacrifice fly.
Dan Runzler (1-0) got the win in relief of starter Craig Clark, who went seven innings, giving up two runs while walking two and striking out seven. Steve Edlefsen pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to get his seventh save.
Scott Hodson (3-6) took the loss for Stockton.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Scheduled pitchers are Scott Barnes (7-3) for the Giants and Scott Mitchinson (0-2) for Stockton.
Notes: Buster Posey missed his fifth straight game after being hit in the head by a pitch. The Giants say they’re just being cautious…Two righthanded pitchers, Joe Martinez and Garrett Broshuis, have been promoted to Fresno of the Pacific Coast League… Right fielder Roger Kieschnick was named California League Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts last week. In four games, Kieschnick collected eight hits in 14 at-bats with three home runs and nine RBI’s.
