Roger Kieschnick capped off the first half with two RBI’s in a six-run eighth inning as the San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports, 8-2, at Banner Island Ballpark.
Kieschnick, playing as designated hitter, knocked in runs 48 and 49 to push past teammate Buster Posey for the team lead. Posey and Thomas Neal, who had the day off Sunday, will join Kieschnick as San Jose's representatives in the California-Carolina All-Star Game June 23 at the Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
It was a solid outing Sunday for San Jose pitcher Paul Oseguera, who started and pitched well but did not get a decision. Oseguera gave up just two earned runs on four hits in six innings, but the teams were tied at 2-2 when he left the game after six innings. David Mixon pitched two scoreless innings of relief and got the win (1-0).
Stockton reliever Derrick Norton was charged with four runs in the eighth inning and suffered the loss (1-4).
The Giants won 14 of their final 18 games and finish the half in first place with a 42-28 record, two games ahead of Modesto and three games ahead of Visalia in the North division. Winning the first half title means San Jose will get a bye in the first round of the California League Playoffs in September.
The second half kicks off Thursday night at 7 p.m. as the Giants host the Ports in a three-game series at Municipal Stadium.
