Catcher Matt Smith homered, doubled and drove in two in Stockton’s 4-1 victory over San Jose Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark. But with Vsalia’s 2-1 loss to Bakersfield, San Jose and Visalia remain tied for first in the California League North.

The Ports took a 2-0 first inning lead then followed with Smith’s homer in the fifth and another run in the sixth inning. The Giants’ only run came on Roger Kieschnick’s eleventh home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Stockton’s Craig Italiano (5-6) started and pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk. Justin Friend and Leonardo Espinal combined to pitch three innings without giving up a run, and Espinal earned his sixth save.

Clayton Tanner (5-2) got the ball for San Jose. He gave up four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. T. J. Brewer pitched in relief, going 2 1/3 innings without yielding a run.

The four-game series continues Friday night in Stockton. Craig Clark (6-2) is the scheduled starter for San Jose. He’ll be opposed by Mike Madsen (0-0) of the Ports in the 7:05 p.m. contest.
