San Jose tied for first after 6-1 win over Visalia

Brian Bocock scores during recent game at Muni Stadium

Scott Barnes struck out nine batters as the San Jose Giants moved into a first-place tie with Visalia with a 6-1 victory over the Rawhide Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

The Giants outhit the Rawhide 13-6 as four San Jose pitchers combined to strike out 13 hitters while walking four. Barnes (7-3) became San Jose’s win leader by giving up just one earned run while striking out nine and walking three in 5 2/3 innings. Daniel Turpen, Dan Runzler and Steve Edlefsen shut out the Rawhide the rest of the way.

Brian Bocock, Buster Posey and Roger Kieschnick each had three hits for the Giants. Thomas Neal hit his 13th home run in the eighth inning. Neal’s hitting streak has now reached 13 games.

Visalia starter Josh Collmenter (6-5) gave up three earned runs on nine hits in five innings.

San Jose and Visalia have identical 39-27 records as they head into the final series before the all-star break. The Giants travel to Stockton Friday to begin a four-game series  against the Ports. Meanwhile, the Rawhide will play four in Bakersfield, and third place Modesto has a four-game home series against Lancaster.
