The San Jose Giants dropped to 14-15 on the road this season with a 5-3 loss to Bakersfield last night. The loss also put San Jose 3 ½ games behind division-leading Visalia, and ended a three-game win streak.
Bakersfield righthander Blake Beaven (5-4) started and went eight innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking two. Evan Reed pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth to secure the Bakersfield win.
Beavan is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two starts against the Giants this season
Newly-recalled pitcher Paul Oseguera (0-1) started for the Giants, was tagged for four runs (three earned) in five innings and took the loss.
In addition to Oseguera, San Jose made several roster changes this week. The Giants added corner infielder David Maroul from Connecticut. Both players had key roles in San Jose’s 2007 championship season. And closer Dan Runzel was called up from Augusta, where he was eleven-for-eleven in save opportunities.
To make room, the Giants sent Relief pitchers Edwin Quirarte and Mitch Lively to Augusta, while first baseman C.J. Ziegler was sent to Extended Spring Training.
The Giants and Blaze continue their three-game series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at Sam Lynn Ballpark scheduled for 7:30 PM. Garrett Broshuis (3-1) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Bakersfield is expected to counter with Tim Murphy (3-5).
