A Tennessee grand jury has indicted defensive tackle and newly minted $100 million man Albert Haynesworth on two charges of misdemeanor traffic violations stemming from a December 13 crash, which seriously injured another driver.
According to Jon Perry attorney for the injured driver, Cory Edmonson:
Haynesworth was witnessed traveling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour after he entered I-65 and immediately began to move quickly in and out of lanes attempting to pass other vehicles in his way. Haynesworth tried to pass Corey’s vehicle on the right, but another vehicle was in the way. Haynesworth slammed on his brakes and abruptly crossed multiple lanes into the inside lane next to the concrete barrier wall. Accelerating his Ferrari up to speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, Haynesworth tried to pass Mr. Edmondson and crossed into his lane suddenly and without warning, striking Mr. Edmondson’s driver side. This collision, which left black paint from Haynesworth’s Ferrari on Mr. Edmondson’s driver side, caused Mr. Edmondson to slam into the concrete median wall resulting in severe injuries to Mr. Edmondson and totaling his vehicle. “Mr. Haynesworth was traveling at such a high rate of speed that he was unable to stop until well beyond the accident. Haynesworth admitted to the investigating officer at the scene that his Ferrari struck Mr. Edmondson’s vehicle.”
Haynesworth faces a maximum of six months incarceration and a $500 fine for one charge and 30 days and $50 fine for the other.
Just four days earlier Haynesworth had been sentenced to 30 days probation and $1000 fine for another speeding violation where he was clocked doing over 100mph in a 70mph zone.
Haynesworth is scheduled to attend the first of the Redskins off season conditioning programs beginning on Monday.
An auspicious start for a player, who claimed at his introductory press conference, that he had “turned around and took his punishment, did what he did, and stepped up and became a great player.”
Other Off-Season News
Reed Doughty is back, he signed a one year deal with the Redskins. During an injury plagued 2008 season, Doughty was supplanted by rookie Chris Horton. We all love Chris Horton, but don’t expect the Redskins Ed Block Courage Award Winner to go quietly into that good night.
Albert Fincher re-signed, keeping what depth the team has left at the linebacker position. Fincher was a solid special teamer, made waves during training camp. With the lack of depth at that position he could earn more playing time in 2009.
Defensive end Phillip Daniels could be back. The Redskins need to fill a lot of roster spots and right now after breaking the bank for Haynesworth Daniels and veteran minimum contract are quite attractive. Of course, finding warm bodies to fill the roster, especially at key positions like defensive end is what you are left with when you overspend for one player.
