Coach Jim Zorn praised the development of Devin Thomas over the course of the season, yesterday.
“His practice speed and his practice attention has dramatically increased. I’ve seen this in other guys in other places I’ve been, where the light goes on. Zorn said. “I think he’s working like a pro needs to work and he’s earned his right to be on this football field, getting him the ball, I’m proud of what he’s doing.”
However Zorn cautioned, “I would say he’s not out of the woods yet, he’s still a pup in my mind and he’s still climbing, but his attitude is right.
Thomas caught his first career touchdown pass against the Eagles two weeks ago. At the outset of training camp, Thomas appeared to develop faster than his fellow draft classmate Malcolm Kelly. However, Thomas floundered in camp and the preseason and lost the starting flanker position to Kelly. Yet over the last few weeks Thomas has stepped up his game.
If the Redskins offense is to snap out of it’s funk, then production from Thomas will help. This probably means that Jason Campbell is getting more comfortable with Thomas as well. Many times this season Thomas (and Kelly) have been open but Campbell hasn’t thrown to them, instead opting for Chris Cooley (now injured) or forcing passes to Santana Moss. Hopefully Campbell’s comfort level is higher and he can get Thomas more involved in the offense.
