The Redskins placed left tackle Chris Samuels on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Samuels injured his neck early in the Redskins 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Samuels suffers from stenosis a condition that narrows the spine.
Samuels has anchored the left side of the Redskins offensive line since he was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2000 draft out of Alabama where he won the Outland Trophy. Samuels was selected to six Pro-Bowls (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008).
Samuels could retire in 2010, but that would put a huge $14.4 million cap hit on the team, if the salary cap survives the next labor agreement. There is the possibility that 2010 is an uncapped season.
If Samuels retired this season instead of going on the IR, the cap hit would be 19.4 million.
