Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato have hired former Green Bay Packers assistant ,Sherman Lewis as an offensive consultant to add, “another pair of eyes” to assist Jim Zorn, in pulling the Redskins out of their offensive funk. The Washington Times’ Ryan O’Halloran reports that idea to approach Lewis originated with Cerrato.
I can only imagine that Lewis and Zorn's first meeting would go like this.
Naturally, given the history of Redskins coaches after consultants are brought in, the writing appears to be on the wall for Jim Zorn.
The Lewis hiring also plays on the notion of whether the come-from-behind win over the Bucs will be the spark that ignites this 2009 Redskins team. The fact that Cerrato felt the need—and Snyder agreed—to hire Lewis before the next game, suggests that they do not believe that it is.
The 2005 squad had Antonio Brown’s 91-yard kickoff return against the Cardinals, which spurred a five- game winning streak and playoff berth. In 2007, Todd Collins came in for an injured Jason Campbell against the Bears on a frigid Thursday night, and sparked a four game win streak, and a playoff berth.
We will find out in the coming weeks, last week's victory is the catalyst for something greater or the beginning of the end of the Jim Zorn experiment.
Still, as I said argued last week, even if this team makes a good run, there are major institutional changes that need to be made in order to build and maintain a consistent winner. Sherman Lewis is merely a band-aid for cancer. The Redskins need an organizational consultant.
As for the fans, their tolerance for more of the same is nil.
