Metro will no longer provide shuttle service between the Landover Metro station and Fed Ex Field for Redskin games.
The Federal Transit Administration issued a new rule, which prohibits public entities from providing charter bus services, if private companies are available to provide the service.
At first blush, this sucks. I was one of the unwashed masses filing into Fed Ex from the shuttle busses. While I envied the tailgaters in all their parking pass glory, I had one up on them because I did not have to sit in the post-game traffic nightmare. I would hop on the bus to Landover, jump on the Orange line one stop to New Carrollton, and boom I was on the B/W Parkway northbound for a taste with Bunk, McNulty and Freamon. I was usually home in an hour.
Looks like I’m going to have to pony up for satellite parking or hoof it the mile from Morgan Boulevard station to Fed Ex Field.
The conservative/libertarian in me is excited at the prospect of privatizing the shuttle service. I’m not buying Karl Swanson’s claim that a privatization would increase the price of the service from $6 to $20. Most private charter services don’t have the overhead that Metro does, and in general, the private sector provides services cheaper and more efficiently than gummint.
With all the fans who take Metro to the game, one would think there is a profit to be made from providing the same service cheaper than Metro.
Although I will issue this caveat, Dan Snyder is probably sniffing the same thing. In that case, Swanson’s $20 figure makes sense. Imagine Redskins trolleys, tricked out with corporate sponsorship, tooling back and forth between the Metro stations and Fed Ex Field.
I think I’ll hedge my bet and go buy some new sneaks for the walk up Summerfield Blvd.
