Week 5: Redskins 23, Eagles 17
The Redskins weather the initial Eagle storm, including opening-drive touchdown and goals to keep them in the game. Offense controls the ball for nearly 19 minutes in the second half, takes the lead for good on two touchdowns. Defense stops Brian Westbrook in the Red Zone. Jason Campbell converts twice on third down and Clinton Portis seals pounds out three yards on fourth and one melting the last 7:18 seconds off the clock. Redskins win 23-17 improve to 4-1, and continue to play with house money.

Offense
After a shaky start, Jason Campbell and the offense were able to get Suisham into range to hit his three field goal attempts (41, 48, and 50 yards), the last kick coming on a nine-play 53 second 50 yard drive, just before halftime.
The running game really shined. Clinton Portis racked up 145 yards of the team’s 203 rushing yards. Before the Redskins, the Eagles had only given up an average of 53.8 yards per game and 2.9 yards per carry. The Redskins averaged 4.6 yards per carry.

Opposing offenses may stun this unit on an opening drive, but Greg Blache is sure to make the proper adjustments. The subsequent Eagle drives after the Westbrook touchdown:

Suisham was clutch in the first half, without those three field goals we are probably not talking 3-2 instead of 4-1.
Durant Brooks’ holding for Suisham may be the only thing keeping him around. A 34.5 average for four punts won’t cut it. His punts are putting his coverage unit into some bad situations, as in short line drive kicks fast folks like Reggie Bush and DeSean Jackson return for touchdowns.

Individual Performances
Clinton Portis was everything Gordie Jones feared he would be.
After missing his first five passes Jason Campbell was an effective 16/29 and 176 yards, and had heady third down scramble to keep the last drive alive. No turnovers again. That must be a record or something.
Andre Carter had the stop of the game busting up Westbrook’s run on third and one, for a five-yard loss, forcing the Akers field goal

The hapless 0-3 St. Louis Rams. The Greatest Show on Turf has jumped the shark. Ted McGinley must have signed on to their practice squad.
This team is for real. They have won four straight since losing to the Giants, and finished the road portion of their division schedule 2-1. Jim Zorn has this team playing up to its potential. Let’s hope he can keep them doing so.
Must. Not. Look. Ahead. On. Schedule. To. Possible. 7-1. Start.
But I will. St. Louis, Cleveland, and Detroit have a combined 1-11 record.
