Trademark Safe for Now, 7 for 10 Draft Picks, 3 for 4 Terps

The Washington Post is reporting that the Washington Redskins won an important ruling in federal district court and that its trademarked name and images are safe for the time being. The aggrieved Native American activists plan to appeal. If the activists were to prevail, the Redskins could stand to lose millions upon millions of dollars in merchandise sales. Can you say salary cap implications!

As a proud Irish-American I have a modicum of sympathy for the activists. However, I’m not signing up to sue Notre Dame.

In other news the Redskins just signed rookies Malcolm Kelly and Durant Brooks. Kelly, a wide receiver, is a second round pick out of Oklahoma. He got a four year $3.36 million deal with a $1.6 million signing bonus. The team drafted Brooks to compete with Derrick Frost for the punting job.

Seven out of the ten 2008 draft picks are now under contract. The two names that stand out are wide receiver Devin Thomas and tight end Fred Davis. Davis as you may recall, infamously overslept for a minicamp practice. Quarterback Colt Brennan is the other unsigned draft pick.

Thomas and Davis need to have their deals done and completed in the next eight days. Rookies who hold out of training camp, especially the first one for a new coach, is a recipe for trouble.

One of the already signed draft picks, who looks very promising is Chad Rinehart. Rinehart is a 6.5/311 lbs offensive lineman. The key to any success this season will be the offensive line and how well they can protect Jason Campbell and open holes for Portis. The Redskins have a knack for finding talent on the line. The found a gem in Maryland’s Stephon Heyer last year.

Speaking of Maryland offensive lineman, the Redskins signed Heyer's College Park mate, Andrew Crummey back in May, along with former Terps tight end Jason Goode. Unfortunately, they released their old signal caller Sam Hollenbach on Thursday.
