I cannot tell you how excited I am to be the DC Redskins Examiner. I am a lifelong Skins fan, born and bred in the DC area (Hyattsville, MD). My formative years coincided with the halcyon days of the first Gibbs era. My wardrobe consisted of a Love them Hogs T-shirt and a Riggo’s Rangers mesh cap. In high school, I would sneak a read of Tony Kornheiser’s Redskins Bandwagon column during my senior Brit Lit class. In fact, I sat in the same Algebra II class with Coy Gibbs. I fondly remember the Hogs, the Fun Bunch, the Smurfs, the Pearl Harbor Crew, and the Posse.
I come from a long line of Redskins fans. My uncle adores Sonny Jurgensen, for me there is no one better than the Diesel. However, my 89 year-old grandmother says Jurgensen and Riggins are pikers compared to “Slingin' Sammy" Baugh. While I saw games at RFK and Fed Ex and read Tony Kornheiser, she watched games at Griffith Stadium and read Shirley Povich. She even drops the f-bomb, “fiddlesticks” when things go bad for the Skins. Just last season my family made its way off the legendary wait list for season tickets.
And that friends, is from whence I come.
In this space, I will provide a fan’s view of the team and game summaries from the perspective of Section 444. A new coach, a new offense (again), one thing is for sure, it is going to be very interesting season.
