This past week, a Phoenix, Arizona couple were arrested for allegedly stealing up to 1,000 baggage items from Sky Harbor Airport. Local authorities speculate this theft was on-going for years. While baggage claim security checks seem to be a thing of the past, a new system, now approved by the Transportation Safet Administration (TSA), is one means of securing the contents of your luggage.
For the past few years, travelers found that locking their luggage was pointless; TSA inspectors at the airports would, in all likelihood, clip any locks placed on luggage in an effort to inspect the bags. The TSA is now working to forge relationships with private companies to develop TSA approved locks. These approved locks have a symbol on them, alerting TSA officials that the lock is accepted. Upon noticing the approved lock symbol, TSA officials can use their 'master key' to unlock these locks. Locks without this symbol must be cut to allow for inspection of the inside of the luggage.
Safe Skies Locks is one of the companies that sells luggage locks that are approved by the TSA. An added benefit to these locks is the lost luggage locator. Free of charge, you can register your Safe Skies lock at boomerangit.com. The lock directs anyone that finds the lock and luggage to contact boomerrangit.com where they will find your up-to-date contact and delivery information.
