I went into the Taproot Theatre play "Enchanted April" having never having seen the 1992 Miramax version, which was released on DVD this year. With only a shadow of the budget that a big Hollywood studio would have, I wanted to see how it might compare.
After being thoroughly impressed by everything from the level of acting, screenwriting, costumes and stage set of the Taproot version, I thought how will a movie version compete? There was so much heart in the Taproot version, and the energy on stage was contagious. Not to mention great screenwriting which allowed every character to come fully alive, not a single one lurked in the dismal shadows.
I’m sure you know how this story ends, I purchased Enchanted April and watched it the next evening. As I sat there viewing the movie with my family, I was afraid that they were going to fall asleep before we even made it to Italy. I kept hoping for one of the characters to “burst” but they never did. Yes, it was filmed at a beautiful location, and there were famous people but where was the heart? Joan Plowright seemed to be the one shining light. In a day where movies are so often the preference, perhaps its time to take a trip to the theatre and see a story come to life in a way that a movie could only dream of.
