But man, the way owner Mel has his minnions trained, I got so mad I am canceling my subscription.
A woman from Sirius called and asked a bunch of routine questions: name, address, phone (duh, she had it; she called me) and then asked for my credit card number.
When I asked why she needed that, she said it was because my old one had expired and I owed two years worth of payments.
"What? I already paid for two years."
Yes, she explained, but I was behind on my payment for the next two years, which was due August 1.
"Who said I wanted two more years?" I asked.
"You owe it because the two years have already started," she said.
"Then I want to cancel my subscription," I said, irate at never being asked if I wanted two more years. She then gave me a number to call to cancel, but I told her that since I was on the phone with her, I was canceling right then and there.
I couldn't do that, she said, and would owe the payments. "Yes, I can, " I replied. "My credit card is expired and you can't charge me for any more. Cancel me."
She said she was putting me on hold, but cut me off.
I had wondered what would happen when this day came and whether it would be worth renewing? Her attitude sealed the deal.
Frankly, the only thing I listen to on it is Howard Stern, and I just haven't gotten $200 of laughs from him. Plus, I can read the show summaries at Marks Friggin.
Also, I think that regular radio has been improving. Not music radio, but I use my iPod for that mostly. But local talk and morning shows have been as entertaining for free as Sirius is for big recession bucks.
After years of avoiding its dulcet and sometimes patronizing tones, I've been listening to more NPR, mostly because there are so few places left to get news. And I love the pro-wrestling match of KGO talk radio, and its cheesier competitors. I like KSCO's morning shows with Rosemary Chalmers, because it does more to highlight its local community than anything else on the dial and in print.
I like the variety of KFJC-FM and KKUP-FM the live music on KPIG-FM, just to name a few.
Basically, I don't think I'll miss Stern enough to pay the bill. But, I guess if I do, I can write it off against the huge profits we bloggers make.
