I'm glad others picked up on what I was saying a couple of days ago about the admission of James Dobson into the National Radio Hall of Fame--that if Hitler had good ratings, he'd get a slot too.
You can read about the protest and ceremony here.
I'm so tired of people not standing up for the promise of America: for equal rights for ALL.
I always wonder how many people who look back at slavery, women's rights and African American rights from today's perspective would actually have stood up for them back then.
The answer, as I see from California's anti-gay Prop 8, is not enough. The majority are still small-minded bigots who don't care about fairness or about protecting the rights of the minority. It disgusts and saddens me greatly.
The other night I had dinner with some people I thought were open-minded and smart, until the subject of politics came up. They have donated large amounts of money to Stanford, even building a swimming pool there, and giving iPods to people serving in the Coast Guard. When the subject of Prop 8 came up, they gave the standard answer: "They can be together, as long as they don't call it marriage."
I kept my mouth shut, because they were friends of my friend, but for two days after, I keep arguing in my head. In 1840 they would have said: "They aren't slaves. They are just helping around the house." Or "Women don't need to vote, their husbands can do it for them."
What happened to equality for all, even in this day? Why would we tolerate laws that make minorities into second-class citizens?
People say that the dictionary defines marriage as between a man and a woman and the definition would be changed by gay marriage. Well, the definition of equal means equal for all. Why would you want to change that?
Maybe we should just abandon the term marriage for ALL and have us all get Civil Unions? I don't hear any of the church members against gay marriage proposing that.
I can tell you that Jesus would be ashamed of them all.
