If you read the Denver Post's account of the Tent State University press conference, written by Kieran Nicholson, then you didn't get the whole story. The article tried very hard to make it sound like everything went smooth and everyone is happy. It didn't, they're not.

In a calculated effort to make things as hard as possible for TSU, and everyone else planning to attend the DNC that doesn't have hotel reservations, or cannot afford to rent one of the many Denver metro homes available for the DNC , the city threw a $1,000 a night price tag on camping overnight in the Denver Coliseum parking lot.

Tent State said rejected the fee and turned their attention to yet another solution. They've now moved on to creating a Freedomville Shanty Town in the middle of the "free speech zone," at the Pepsi Center. Cuernavaca Park is the new home base for operations. The Coliseum will still be the place for the TSU sponsored concerts, to be held Wednesday, August 27.

The two sources quoted by the Denver Post story, City Councilwoman Carla Madison and Denver Parks Department representative Jill McGranahan, actually conspired to disrupt the press conference, according to a TSU statement released shortly after the event transpired. This was not reported by the Post.

Here is the full text of the press release issued by TSU.

CITY CRASHES TENT STATE ANNOUNCEMENT

City of Denver Protestors Disrupt Press Conference

City of Denver protestors Carla Madison and Jill McGranahan disrupted today’s press announcement by Tent State University.   The uninvited guests took the stand immediately after Tent State organizer Jojo Pease finished her announcement.  Protestor Jill McGranahan with the protest group Denver Parks Department proceeded to make fantastical claims that the City of Denver was providing the Denver Coliseum to Tent State University, that Tent State had been moved, and that the City of Denver values free speech.

To clarify:

-Tent State University (TSU) paid for the Denver Coliseum for Wednesday’s concerts.  The City of Denver did not help facilitate or fund this, nor would we allow them too.

- Tent State University made the decision to move from City Park to City of Cuernivaca Park after due to concerns of residents near City Park, its close proximenty to the Pepsi Center, and for logistical reasons.  Through the lottery permit process, TSU secured all the necessary permits over the last few weeks without the assistance of the City.

- Tent State is still marching to the “freedom cages” each night to erect the Freedomville Shanty Town where demonstrators will feign sleep each night in protest.  Tent State will not be camping at the Denver Coliseum.
