How many people can say they were part of an unprecedented, historic American event?
The Democratic National Convention is the first significant opportunity for the younger generation of this country to be part of history. The DNC could be the defining moment of political progress in the U.S. It is also the first time our voices will be recognized by the mainstream media, politicians, and the American public.
If you don't want to sit on the sidelines and be a spectator, then get involved! It's that simple.
The Democratic National Convention Committee is already counting on over 21,000 volunteers to help out during the August 25-28 dates. If you want to join the volunteer squad you can sign up here at the Denver Host Committee web site. This site is the official resource for all things DNC related.
The DNCC is also hosting a YouTube contest where people can submit videos explaining "Why are You a Democrat in 2008?" The winner will get to attend the convention and spend a day with Barack Obama on the campaign trail. Sign up quick though, the contest closes August, 1.
Not to leave any stone unturned, in a convention first, the DNC will be simulcast live in Spanish.
If you're a person who doesn't like to get their hands dirty, but likes to watch the action from up close (then perhaps relay your thoughts and observations to others via blog, vlog or video), you might be interested in hanging out at the Big Tent. This is where alternative media personnel will be hanging out during the convention. The progressive blogosphere, as it's commonly referred to, led by The DailyKos and Denver-based ProgressNow and The Alliance for Sustainable Colorado have organized a central command post for anyone who wants to be part of the "media." The Big Tent will feature wireless internet, work stations, a stage for speakers, and a refreshment / lounge area.
If you don't want to volunteer, and you don't want to write about the convention, then you'll probably end up just watching the whole thing on TV, from you couch. The Denver Police Department probably supports this option, but there's still time to join one of the other organizations offering people opportunities for action...
