Some people describe their dogs as characters, but on my recent national book tour that took me to New York City, I met a dog who is truly a card. A true poker-playing pooch. Meet Jilli Dog, a spirited, super smart 5-pound Yorkie, who “plays” poker with her owner, Rick Caran before audiences all over North America.
We met at a book signing event inside a festive and fun pet boutique owned by Ada Nieves. Caran, who is a columnist for Yorky Club Magazine, puts the “d” in delight in his training style with Jilli. His positive training style has honed Jilli’s skills to the level that she is a certified therapy dog and reigns as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue.
And did I mention the pair has performed their poker show in the gambling Mecca – Las Vegas? Yep. It’s not every day you witness a pint-sized pup “beat” the house with a winning poker hand.
I recently featured this dynamic duo in my e-newsletter, Arden Moore Knows Pets and I invite you to watch them in high-stakes action in this accompanying video posted on YouTube with permission from Caran.
If the popularity of poker ever expands to a national pup-playing Texas hold ‘em competition, my money is on Jilli.
