Can you get a speeding ticket on Grant’s Trail?

I think it’s a legit question. I mean, if you’re walking along a pedestrian trail you shouldn’t be afraid of being run over by any sort of wheeled vehicle, right?

We like our roadways fast in this part of the world I’ve noticed. That includes bike and walking trails like Grant’s Trail. We can’t wait to pass that slowpoke old lady in the red Keds and khaki windbreaker.

“On your left!” sometimes the bikers scream as they whiz by so close they could give a guy with a four o’clock shadow a very close shave. And you’d better move over and let them pass if you know what’s good for you.

Even with the speedsters on roller blades and bicycles, there’s lot of good walking to be had on Grant’s Trail. If you live in South County area you know what I mean. If you don’t, maybe I shouldn’t tell you… We might want to keep the secret to ourselves.

You can see the world famous Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales at Grant’s Farm from Grant’s Trail. You can see rabbits galore in the summer and not-quite-so-flat squirrels. At least on a bike trail they have a fighting chance of darting out the way of the wheels.

Come summer, the trail will be filled with families pushing baby carriages, skateboarders, joggers, track stars, Lance Armstrong-wannabes and us lowly walkers… or those of us who are lucky to get up to three miles an hour on a good day.

You can see spring coming alive this week on the trail. Many area schools are on spring break this week, so it’s a good time to take some time and get off the freeways and travel along a narrow and winding back way. You’ll be glad you did.
