
Tragedy hit Fort Hood Army base in Texas today when one of their own opened fire killing 13 and injuring 31people. According to reports army psychiatrist, Major Nadal Malik Hussain opened fire on soilders getting ready to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The incident is believed to be the result of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress disorder).
The incident began at 1:30 pm while soilders that are being deployed to the war zone were getting a medical check up at the Soilder-Readiness processing center. The psychiatrist opened fire with two guns killing 12 army personal and one civilian police officer. Major Nadal was shot multiple times and injured by the police. He is said to be alive and in stable condition.
Major Nadal who is a medical doctor and a licensed psyciatrist joined the military in 1997 according to CNN. He has also served as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. helping soilders who returned from the war zone deal with the trauma. The medical center treats badly wounded soilders and help them cope with the situation. Nadal was just recently transfered to the Fort Hood base.
According to tv reports Major Nadal recently received orders to be deployed to Iraq which he wasn't happy about. This unfortunate incident is believed to be a result of PTSD(Post traumatic stress disorder) with which he was trying to help other soilders cope with. Incidently victim of what he was trying to heal. Science Daily reports the PTSD Rate as high as 35 percent in soilders deployed in Iraq.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. The war is taking its toll on the U.S. soilders. Threre has been a increase in incidents of this nature recently. A U.S. soldier in Iraq killed 5 fellow soilders by opening fire at them at Camp Liberty Stress Clinic on May 11th, 2009 among other incidents.
Another problem faced by the Army is an alarming rise in the suicide rate for four years in a row. According to NY Times, atleast 128 soilders commited suicide in 2008.
