Indianapolis Colts S Bob Sanders officially is out for the season.

Sanders, who sustained a left elbow injury against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, has been placed on injured reserve, the Colts announced Friday afternoon. ESPN’s Adam Schefter earlier in the day reported that Sander’s injury is a torn biceps.

Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said late Friday morning that Sanders would undergo a surgical procedure of some kind, but at that point, the extent wasn’t known. Sanders, who missed the first five games of the season with a knee injury, visited with noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews Thursday.

Sanders, who started the last two games, played after injuring his elbow against the 49ers Sunday. Caldwell said this week the elbow flared up afterward.

Sanders has missed 40 of 87 career games, missing 10 games with a knee injury in 2006 and 12 games with a knee injury last season. He made the Pro Bowl in 2005 and 2007, and was the Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2007.
